I collect pretty rocks and tiny broken sea glass and tiny broken shells. Everything was found in nature, except some of the stones I have are from other countries. I bought those in stores, but never paid more than $20 each.
I guess I'm a cheap collecter. : )

Antiques. Especially woodblocks prints and pre WWII Japanese Kimono. I have dozens of each... Some I found for pennies and are worth thousands!
I started collecting pottery. (honestly, I don't remember how.) I think it was because when I was a kid, one of the only happy memories I have was of family outings to the local auctions.
I started getting into antiques because of the whole auction process. Which I am completely addicted to and since you have got to be able to really know what you are looking at, I had to learn about antiques so as not to constantly bring home a bunch of crap.
Pottery was first, but I always loved Japanese art and artifacts, so I taught myself to speak and read (for the most part because I speak better than I read.) the Japanese language and here I sit with a mountain of Japanese stuff!
I also collect ancient lacquer and cloissone. Most of my things have to do with Geisha because I believe I was one in another life...
"No later than Ming." is my motto and my nickname with the local antique dealers in the area."

Cook books. I started in the 1980's when I began noticing them in the antique stores. I find, that they are a very interesting documentation of history.
