I seem to have a new colony of bees moving into a landscaped area along the side of my house. Seems to be an in ground hive along the foundation. Any suggestions on how to deter/discontinue this from continuing without contacting an exterminator.

Do this ASAP because the larger their population gets the more aggressive they become. Put a brick beside the hole sometime during the day. Put it down gentle so you don't disturb them.

Then on a cool night blow some Sevin dust into the hole and put the brick over the hole to trap them down there with the dust. If you don't have a duster use an old squeezable catsup bottle. Put about 1/8 cup (no more) into the bottle and but the cap back on. Put it down to the hole (actually touch the ground with it) and squeeze.

If you need a flashlight to see set it up lighting the hole about 90 degrees from your approach route. If any do get disturbed they are photosensitive and will go to the flashlight instead of to you. Also walk away--they are best at seeing motion so don't make quick moves.

Wait until dusk when they will move back into the hive. Place a large glass or clear plastic bowl over the hole. Make sure it is snug to the earth. I thought this was crazy, but tried it at the suggestion of a friend and it worked. They all just sat on the ground under the bowl until they died after several days.

i could 2d the suggestion of everybody else right here! genuinely call an exterminator to guard them. i think of one approach exterminators use to humanely kill them - is fairly suck them up in a shopvak that has a brick of dry ice interior - directly killing them and freezing them. i've got heard the place some exterminators will then turn their catch over to researchers who fairly extract their venom for medical analyze. in spite of everything - they are plenty extra suited equiped to handle those invaders, and furnish suggestion to avert new infestations than I. suggestion i supplies - must you accidently disturb the colony with the help of walking too close, mowing the backyard, etc - do not RUN! those animals whilst alerted, will cue into seen alerts and attack something that strikes. Stand nonetheless or back away very slowly to guard, and you will go through few if any stings. one element that makes wasps very risky is they are able to sting you assorted circumstances.

I've had this problem by my patio. I sprayed wasp killer down the hole and covered it over with some mortar mix I had in the garage. Worked great. They didn't come back, or out.
