Except that I would consider it excessive punishment to have to risk your life to earn your freedom, but let's say its on a voluntary basis. The people in jail have mental problems, and none of the discipline or training of the military. In fact they rebel against authority, not good for their commanding officers. And what about the people who would run away rape, muder, etc. in other countries. Ths would reflect VERY poorly on the American armed forces. It sounds like a good idea on the surface, but it just wouldn't work well.
P.S. We need to learn from history, many countries used to do this (and some 3rd world countries still do), and guess what, people disobeyed orders, they killed fellow servicemen, they went AWOL, and they commited crimes in the countries where they were "serving". Sure, some of them were good soldiers, but would you like to have a few honest soldiers at the cost of the image and productivity of the United States military. Its just not a risk we can take, especially knowing the consequences. If we don't learn from the mistakes of history, we are doomed to repeat them!

Been watching "The Dirty Dozen"? This was a movie, not a real thing. Instilling discipline, pride, loyalty, self esteem, and all the other traits necessary for a successful "killing team" would not be possible. I meant "killing team" as a positive statement. As Gen. Patton said that the idea on winning a war was to kill more of the SOBs than they killed of you.

Being in the army is like a brotherhood. As sadistic as it sounds, only decent people deserve to be in the army. It'd be a good idea though, maybe if they survive they'd reform...a liberal fantasy but hey, it's better than sending our young guys (and gals) out to the front lines.

Nope. Military personnel are allowed to interact with society and can carry arms. Would you want a murderer carrying a deadly weapon (and being trained in it's efficient use) walking around? I wouldn't. Also, the military likes to cover up things that it's soldiers do. They'd pretty much allow him to keep killing civilians on OUR soil.

Contrary to popular belief, the army is not full of a bunch of idiots with guns. Today's army (at least in the US), is full of professional soldiers who are intelligent and have undergone years of training to get where they are. That doesn't exactly sound like a good place for convicted murders does it?

Great idea.
But Criminals make lousy Soldiers & have a difficult time obeying orders.
Then again it'd B a good way of easing the Prison Population
& any over-crowding.
Prehaps we could Lobotomise 'em first!

Being a professional soldier in this day and age requires intelligence, loyalty, and discipline. Murderers usually have none of these qualities. No, its a very bad idea. Murderers kill who they want to - professional soldiers hold their fire when the situation calls for it.

Think about the type of person that is in prison. As a war veteran, I would not have to rely on that type of person to watch my back side. Soldiers have to trust each other, and depend on each other to survive.

First, people in the Army are not murderers.
The key factor in your question is RESPONSIBILITY. Murderers are in jail because they are irresponsible and putting a weapon in the hands of an irresponsible person is nuts.
