I seem to have a new colony of bees moving into a landscaped area along the side of my house. Seems to be an in ground hive along the foundation. Any suggestions on how to deter/discontinue this from continuing without contacting an exterminator.

The only other thing you can do is call county ag or university extension, occasionally they'll help you with advice on/getting rid of ground-nesting yellowjackets (which are the more aggressive).

The best advice I can give is to avoid the nest area and keep any garbage and food waste covered. They are most active during the day so confine your activities in the area to dawn/dusk or night.

I would second the advice of everyone else here! Definitely call an exterminator to take care of them. I think one method exterminators use to humanely kill them - is basically suck them up in a shopvak that has a brick of dry ice inside - instantly killing them and freezing them. I've heard where some exterminators will then turn their catch over to researchers who actually extract their venom for scientific studies. In any case - they are far better equiped to deal with these invaders, and provide advice to prevent new infestations than I.

Advice I can provide - should you accidently disturb the colony by walking too close, mowing the lawn, etc - DO NOT RUN! These animals when alerted, will cue into visual signals and attack anything that moves. Stand still or back away very slowly to shelter, and you'll suffer few if any stings. One thing that makes wasps very dangerous is they can sting you multiple times.

Seems that you do have yellow jackets or some other low-dwelling species of bees. There are a lot of good sprays available, but if you want to get rid of them for sure, call the exterminator and ask what you might be able to use. They're usually good about answering consumer's questions. They know you're going to have to get your house inspected for termites anyway!

Yellow jackets are part of the wasp family and make thier hives underground...I would leave extermination to a professional because yallow jackets are very aggressive.

Wait till nightfall while they are going to pass back into the hive. place an excellent glass or sparkling plastic bowl over the hollow. be sure that's comfortable to the earth. i presumed this became loopy, yet tried it on the suggestion of a pal and it labored. all of them in basic terms sat on the floor below the bowl till they died after quite a few days.
