He knew that he wasn't dead when he left him on the volcano planet, as killing him would have made him less Jedi. He knew he had been rescued by the people of the dark side of the force and survived; hence the reason why they had to split up Amidalla's twins and sent Luke to live with his Aunt and Uncle on Tattoine (can't spell it). Hoping that Anakin would not know they survived their mother's death and could grow up in peace without Vader trying to track them down. Also, if Anakin had died, Obi Wan would have sensed a disturbance in the force.

He finds out later because he knows what type of power he has and Obi Wan has the force so he is able to discern what is going on and if he was able to survive or not...He also was his trainer so he knows his mannerisms and stuff like that
