See the refs. Hope's apparatus provides a demonstration of the temperature of maximum density of water. It consists of a vertical tube containing water, and sealable openings near the top and bottom for insertion of two thermometers. The apparatus is placed in a larger container containing a freezing mixture (ice and salt) and the thermometers are observed. Initially the lower thermometer indicates a lower temperature than the upper one. As cooling continues, the upper part cools to freezing (and may start to freeze) while the lower part remains at 4 C, thus showing that the 4 C water is denser than the freezing-point water.
