He was going to retire after the season anyway. So this way they got something in return for a player they weren't going to have next year anyway.

Because they suck and they know it. Wells may be old and breaking down but he always finds a way to get the job done. Sox know they are out of playoff contention so they may as well trade Wells while they can still get something for him. It's a win-win for both sides, Wells who wasn't happy in Boston (said the fans cramped his style....he said he couldn't even go out w/o being harassed and often stayed home watching DVDs at night) is going back home to San Diego and Boston gets to rebuild a little. Funny, Wells spent time in NY and didn't feel cramped by the fans...shows us how obsessed Sox fans really are. Wells is a laid back kinda guy who likes to party and said it's like the Boston fans thought they owned the players.

this should help explain it
Roxbury MA (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Bostoncourtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Boston Red Sox, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone

I don't know if the Red Sox know something about Wells that we don't (similar to Andy Pettite leaving the Yankees), but I do know that they wouldn't have let him go unless they felt that they were out of postseason contention.

first his production this year hasn't been up to par.
second they have aton of young prospects (papelborn, lester) that they wanna get as many innings in them as possible.
third-he is the 2nd oldest player today, vastly overweight, and probally wanted to go back to San Diego, (his home town) to finish his very respectible career.
200 wins+ wins as a lefty, 2 world titles, and a perfect game under his belt makes him a possibilty for cooperstown.

because they want to give the september call ups playing time since their season went down the drain after a five game sweep to the yankees, in their own park.

Probably because he only has a 2-3 record for them with a 4.98 era - he has stunk this year.
