When one feels they have to build themselves up constantly regarding what they want others to think about themselves....whether it is their sexual ability, their intelligence, or anything else. Doesn't the fact that they have to tell others constantly about what they want to be known about themselves, instead of letting others see it for themselves, tell you that they must not really believe it themselves, so they try to talk others into believing it? You can't tell someone how you are....that pretty much says, "this is how I want you to see me, but have to tell you, because you won't see it on your own." If they are secure enough about how or who they are, why do they have to repeat it over and over?

I don't think that this is a particularly new phenomenon. Braggers have been around since the beginning of time. But since we no longer teach our children proper behavior qualities, like modesty, humility, etc... the braggers now have no moderating forces in their lives. They see braggers on TV, in the media, on music videos, etc.
I think 100 years ago, these people would just be called rude.
So it would be a few parts ignorance, a few parts lack of etiquette training, some lack of good, quality character development from parents (many who lack character themselves) and a bunch of self absorbed, self centered hubris.
Oh, and it's a sign of the end times.

I think that's true lots of time where, like you said, the person needs to build themselves up in hopes that others will see them that way. But I also think there are people who are narcissistic and conceited, and they really love bragging about themselves because they truly think they're special. It's annoying when someone does that though.

BOTH. people feel like they need to be negative to others to make themselves feel better about themselves. But they are also ignorant because they don't understand what they're saying and they do not think things through before they say it.

Security is all in the mindset of an individual... the stronger the will, the better the image! But really who cares about image? When it all boils down to it! Image like clothes can be shed... its the basics that matter! Survival of body and soul!

Sounds like insecurity to me. Btw, I'm a great person and I've been told I look "hot". Also, I find myself rather intelligent. And funny....

insecurity and lack of self-identity, requiring constant external affirmation of their value....emotionally burdensome and can drain your energy if you let them
