first i would hook up some jumper cables to your battery, it may not have enuf juice to crank. second, crawl under the vehicle and check to make sure all the wires are tight on the starter. then tap on the side of the starter. if this allows it to start the brushes are sticking in the starter. also if it has a solenoid attatched to the starter, it may be burnt or cracked also

It realy depends on what kind of car it is. But first, take off the battery cables from the battery and clean the posts and replace the cables. even a new battery can have a dead cell in it. your battery might be to small. Don't buy a battery that the book tells you to buy. You want atleast a battery that has 650 cold cranking amps. This is just for startes. Most cars newer than 1977 don't have points.

If all you get is a clicking noise, sounds more like the solenoid. Depending on the type of car, you can take your jumper cables and bypass the solenoid, turning the starter.

Your starter may be bad, tapping on it will not help. The solenoid may also be the problem. You can jumper the two large wires with a screw driver. Also, have you made sure that your battery cable ends are clean at the battery terminal.

Crack it good and hard near the bulge that is the solenoid that engages the bendix.
Also it may be the connections and not the starter, it's worth taking a look.

Is much easier to replace the starter, if your just getting rid of the car, then let the towing company worry about that.
