I have just moved from the US to the Middle East. My desktop worked perfectly in the US running a wirelss SBC/Yahoo ADSL modem and my laptop would connect flawlessly to the system. The PC was connected to the ADSL modem through a D-Link ethernet adaptor. The house i have in the Middle East has internet sockets on the wall - they are LAN sockets n the internet comes right through them as if you are on a network - no modem. My laptop works perfectly plugged into the wall however my Desktop connects but can't stay connected. SO I bought a Linksys WRT54g wirelss router to get wifi fro the laptop (no problem) and to get the desktop in via a router. SAME PROBLEM with the Desktop. SO i bought a new wethernet card (538TX instead of 530TX) to no avail - SAME PROBLEM. SO I bought a Linksys PCI WMP54G wirelss adapter to access the internet to no avail. SAME PROBLEM. Seems to connect for 20-30 seconds then drop out and re aquire. So that is through 2 ethernets cards a router and wifi.

I am in Dubai. There is only one ISP here - it is a government controleld Monopoly.
Secondly I HAVE NO MODEM. The wireline comes out of the wall
Lastly I doubt there is anything wrong with what is comming out of the wall. The same cable and network connection gets blistering fast connection on my LAPTOP and my work PC. In fact I am writing this on my LAPTOP and have been continuosly connected for 7 days through the WIFI router and the DESKTOP cannot stay connected for more than 30 seconds before cycling the connections again. DESKTOP behaves the same direct into the wall, thorugh te router by cable or through the router by wifi

By watching the connection status I have learned a bit more. If I disable Internet Protocl (TCP/IP) then it stays connected no problem. Also if I watch the cycle on the "support" screen of the Nework COnnection Status screen when it drops out it comes up with "Invalid IP address".
Does this help anyone help me??

I seem to have fixed it by manually configuring my IP address. Why is this?
