Actually one of the first voyages from Mars brought back samples that had everyone flapping about "Life on Mars" for awhile. They weren't even currently living, just fossils left in stone. But there was some further indication that those lifeforms could have been the same as those that life on earth started from.

I read something about a possibility that bacteria (as a spore) or a virus could survive an explosive upheaval which then after having undergone the trip from Mars to the Earth could then possibly survive re-entry and land on Earth as a meteorite, then undergo changes over time which after many millions of years of natural selection might have resulted in higher life forms here on Earth. I have to say I have my doubts. I thinks it's much more likely that life on Earth began right here on Earth and that it didn't need any sort of wild Martian spores in order to grow and thrive.
