I'm interested in making icons, headers, banners, and color bars for livejournal. But I don't know if I should use Paint Shop or Photoshop. Can anyone tell me how I can get either software for free?

Are you willing to learn, to make really different stuff?

One of my favourite graphics programs is called POV-Ray, which is the Persistence of Vision Raytracer. It is free; it is an example of Open Source software. If you are leery about running free software for stability reasons, I can tell you I have run this program since 1999 and it has never crashed once. That's better than ANY commercial software I have used.

POV-Ray is a 3D environment. It's very different, because you use a special programming language to describe what you want to see. POV-Ray takes these instructions and actually shows it to you! Literally, anything you can describe in the Scene Description Language can take form, in 3D or even animated 3D!

There are some extensions to POV-Ray, like Moray under Windows (which is a low cost shareware graphical front end) and MegaPOV, an extended version with a nice user interface. I use MacMegaPOV, the Universal Binary version, on my Mac Mini.

Try it out, read the documentation on the website, and take a look at some of the images -- especially Gilles Tran, probably the best POV-Ray artist on Earth. His website is oyonale.com.
