Lions are, on the whole, much more aggressive - especially the males - because they live in groups and are constantly interacting with other lions.

Male lions live short, violent lives as they must battle to keep control of a pride - and are often killed when younger males attempt a take-over. Lionesses also battle each other, though seldom ever to the death, during disputes over food. When a pride is feeding it is every lion for itself, including the cubs. Aggression is necessary to get enough to eat in lean times. The most aggressive animals are the ones to survive hard times.

Tigers, on the other hand, lead entirely solitary lifestyles, including the males. The only time tigers come together is when mating and when a mother is still raising her cubs, especially females. Male tigers generally don't fight for the rights to mate.

Tigers have little reason or opportunity to fight amongst themselves and therefore are less aggressive when it comes to non-predatory aggression.
