A plot line is the order in which the events happen. Normally it is referred to when you are discussing the things that don't seem to matter at the time, but are important parts to the plot. In the movie Citizen Kane, the Kane character starts the movie uttering the work Rosebud. The movie's plot line follows a reporter investigating what it meant to the mogul. No one knows, so he investigates deeper. The whole movie is about the life of the mogul, but none of the characters knows what significance Rosebud has to the character, even in the end, no one finds out, but the audience realizes that it is what motivated him to be the mogul he turned out to be. A scene shortly after the movie opens depicts a boy being taken from his parents. We don't know why it is important because it seems we are just seeing a person's life's events from beginning to end. It turns out that the childhood scene is integral to the plot line as nearer the end of the movie, that scene is replayed and we see the answer to the question, what did Rosebud mean to Kane?

It's the story line. A plot line will tell you the events that occur in the book /play/poem, and it's basically a summary of what it's about.
