Coz the captain's a "he", so it would be gross if his beloved partner's (the ship, of course) a "he" too.
And how do I know that the ship is the captain's (preferrable male) beloved partner?
Coz they usually say: "The captain sinks with the ship"
But I guess THAT only happens in movies, coz if I'm captain and me ship's sinkin', then I frickin' don't care!!! I'll just jump off the ship! Who cares for that piece of metal junk anyway!! It's barely human!!!
Where was I?

Gender designations are typically applied to things that seem to have personalities. Male or female seems to be a matter of custom. For example, Russian ships are referred to as 'he'...

I'm not quite sure on this one. I think it orrigionated from another language besides English because we don't give objects gender. The French and Spanish do. Like El (he) and (La) she. Which is why I dislike other languages...XD
