Take this into account. There are many, many people in this country that cannot afford healthcare insurance.
Also many people in this country who cannot get work or maintain work due to poor health who cannot afford the surgeries or medications in order to maintain health.
The cost of healthcare is rising faster than inflation. (go to www.bls.gov) for these stats.
Finally, take into account that Canada has no national debt, and has nationalized healthcare. They also won a Toyota plant over the U.S, primarily because Toyota would not have to pay for pensions, or healthcare insurance in Canada.
More and more companies (GM and Delphi for starters) are reducing healthcare coverage for their employees and retirees due to the rising costs of healthcare.
So, are we making the right decision on not having some form of nationalized healthcare available here in the U.S.?

tok H. I don't know if you have ever applied for healthcare assistance but a lot of people who need help cannot get it through the government. Especially if it involves constant medication or additional treatments such as a surgery. Ask the local Dept of Health on how many people are applying for healthcare assistance and a lot of them are getting turned down.

We need nationalized healthcare for the simple reason that a healthy nation remains a powerful nation.
The ppl who oppose it have no clue about what it takes to remain a superpower. They would rather spend 27 billion in the Iraqi war then keep our countrymen healhty.
Yes tax dollars will pay for it but they cover EVERYBODY... so how does that discriminate with your tax dollars? How does that take something from you and give to others? You get it too morons.
Also, you have some very valid points about ppl that can not work due to health problems that could easily be fixed if they could only get medication. I have known a few ppl like that before.
One thing that gets me is... the idioticy of the republican party that cuts off its nose to spite a democrat. I honestly don't think they realize that when we underpay workers and don't give them healthcare... we pick up the tab for them
Examples,
Worker has 2 kids and makes $9 an hour... guess who pays her daycare? = WE DO
Worker has 2 kids and makes $9 an hour ... guess who pays her healthcare? = WE DO because she is under the poverty line and has kids therefore she gets Medicaid
Worker has 2 kids and makes $9 an hour... guess who pays her food with foodstamps? = WE DO once again because she is under the poverty line, she qualifies for assistance
Now here is the kicker that blows my mind about how stupid republicans are.... Look at those examples and use your brain a minute... WHO IS BENEFITTING OFF OF TAX DOLLARS in each of those cases? = the corporation... her employer is able to underpay his worker while the taxpayer has to pick up the tab for her AND HER FAMILY!!
Republicans would rather gripe and raise hell about universal healthcare because they see it as just another social program. They would rather be brainwashed and manipulated into that us and them way of thinking MEANWHILE paying taxes to help the corporations be able to screw them over.
Like I said before, they would rather cut off their nose to spite a democrat.
PS I don't usually go off like this but this issue really gets under my skin and I am sick of the idiots running our government while claiming the poor just want to take from them. They really need to think about things like I described above.
PS2 In my state, NC, if you are single with NO kids and got cancer or some other serious illness, you would literally just wait until you died. Here in NC, if you do not have children, you do not qualify for ANY medical assistance.
Where do these morons come from... some of the answers say the government will pick up the tab... they didn't read your question obviously and don't know facts. Like I just said, example is my state... no children and if you get sick and are poor without health insurance, you just die. I know this... I have seen it and I have researched it because I didn't believe it.
NC = get sick and just go to the woods and die

Bum is right about tax $$$ covering poverty level health care. Most states in America have the same "NC = get sick and just go to the woods and die"
There are some dirty secrets to it on the left coast. Say a woman gets prenatal health care assistance in CA. Then the baby is born and the State signs her up for some Government Cheese. She has to pay every cent back. Oh they don't care how long it takes. But every penny comes back with service charges. The person can never own inherit or buy a house. Without first paying back the medical expense.
What this actually does is allow the state to seize thousands of homes from the working poor and sell them off in blocks to developers.
And this applies to the Mexican as well as to the American It is not a race issue at all it is a business of Government against the working class.

I believe we receive good care because it is privatized. Hospitals work very hard to ensure that you take your business to them. (My friend is a hospital administrator) A perfect example of a government run medical plan is the VA. It's filled with waste, government employees that can't be fired that need to be fired, and doctors rotate all the time. To have that on a national level would be outragous. What it will cost the tax payer in additional taxes to operate an ineffecient monster this size would be more than what it would cost you now to buy your own health insurance. So yes we are making the right decision to NOT have a national healthcare.
The US has Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, and BMW plants. So we aren't being left out in the cold.

you make an exellent point with the toyota plant , i have never thought of that . But nothing should be for free , america was built by hard work and should continue that way . Ift this wasn't the case I could quit today amd get the government to take care of my responsibilities . these people in question obviously made poor decisions in life not to have healthcare . the very small percentage of people that actually can't get a job because of their health need some sort of program whcih they do, but for the majority they need to get a job . From my understanding canada pays their healthcare through overpricing everything , so healthcare is free but it cost much more to live , of course i have not researched canada's finances but i would assume that is why everything cost more there

You are mistaken about Canada's national debt. It is higher than America's, at about 68% of its economy. I think you probably don't know what "national debt" is. ALL nations have national debt, and a certain level of it is beneficial and necessary for their economies and infrastructure. Once it rises above 50%, however, it becomes problematic. America's is well below that, and most European countries have a higher rate of national debt than does America, some reaching as high as 75%.
Also, nationalized health care is not the panacea you make it out to be. Canada and many European countries are experiencing severe financial problems trying to uphold their health care systems.
Also, Canada is only able to (barely) support its system because of the USA. Canada's economy benefits in myraid ways from the strong economy of its neighbor to the south. If the economy of the USA tanked today, wave bye-bye to Canada's supposedly wonderful health care system, as well as all its other social programs.
Furthermore, because of the financial problems with Canada's system, that country is experiencing a brain drain of good doctors - they are leaving Canada for America. In fact, western Canada is facing a crisis of doctors fleeing eastward, then south to America.
Yes, there are problems with health care in the USA. But judging from the example of Canada and Europe, nationalized care is NOT the way to go. We will figure out something else, thankyouverymuch.
Love, Jack.

It is foolish to compare our heath care system with other countries as many of these answerers have. Different dynamics all together.
Our health care system in the US costs far more the way it is, then if we were to have universal heath care.
Services for all epople would improve vastly, and cost less then the way we treat now (i.e. using the emregency room services to treat non-emergency situations)
costs would be cut on paperwork.
costs would decrease on insurance for doctors and the incentive to work in the field would increase.
Overall, universal health care is the answer, due to the massive pharma-lobby in Washington they have stifled the debate and politicans don't care about wasting the public's money on the flawwed health care system we have.
I find it embarassing that on so many issues the US is shmaed by a poor 3rd world country like Cuba, whose response to Hurricaines, health care system and national solidarity is far superior to ours. They are pverty sticken (due to a terrorist war waged against them by the US since the 50s) and we are the richest nation in the world by far, with no threats whatsoever... it is sad to be taught democracy in such a way, we should eb far more active citizens and we need to wake up before we are forced to again...
all power to the people.

We probably do need some kind of basic nationalized healthcare plan ...The would not replace private plans or private medicine..
Poor people do not drive nice new cars and do not have big houses and can not afford many luxuries that the rich can afford to pay for.
Same would go for the public assistance welfare plan....
You get a basic level of care...
You want more...
You pay for it yourself...

if you've ever LIVED in a country with nationalized health care, you would understand why ours is still privatized, and here's why:
people provide a service (in this case health care) because they get paid for doing a good job. when health care gets nationalized and doctors have no motivation... you will have to BRIBE your way into getting medical attention. its all about profit. so nationalizing health care will do nothing to help the poor, it will only increase corruption.
