when i push the start button the motor turns over about half a turn and then the starter just spins what is wrong? if i take the cover off is there any thing i could do?

The starter clutch isn't working properly. It's a piece of junk setup that only Yamaha used. They stoped using it. If you're mechanicaly inclined, remove the cover that the starter motor goes into (put an oil drain bucket under it). Some times the gears are worn and don't catch. Or the spring could be bad. Whatever... you have to look at it.

Your may have teeth missing from the flywheel.try rolling the bike in gear a few inches forward or back,then see if it will engage. Ebay is a good place to find parts if needed

Do a search for Mike's XS. He has all the parts you need to fix it.

Sounds like the sprag clutch is not holding. Is this a twin or triple?
