What or who is African? Is being African now racially exclusive? Am I not African, because of the color of my skin? I was born there, I grew up there. I know no other home. The land talks to me. My soul finds peace there. I am only truly at home when I stand in front of the mother city and look out over the ocean. But I am white, so I am told that I am European. I don’t know Europe. I have no family there. I don’t even know anyone who lives in Europe. Yet I am European due to the color of my skin!? Will Smith comes to South Africa and says that he is home. The man grew up in the States, but is more African than someone who has lived their entire life there, just because I am not black?? So the distinction is based on the color of your skin? Isn’t that EXACTLLY what we worked so hard to get rid of: RASISM???? I look and I see people, not skin colors, religions or differences, but variety. GOD BLESS AFRICA!

An African is a native or inhabitant of Africa or a person of African descent. That means white people in South Africa are considered Africans and anyone who says different is a bloody fool. Short answer maybe, but one you can call reference to any dictionary in the world.

In my opinion I think that only people born in Africa are African..it has nothing to do with the colour of your skin or the language you speak. This is my home. When I go to England I dont feel some deep connnection witht hte land, I think its rubbish when black people from other countries come to SA or other African countries and start getting all emotional because they are in the "mother land" They may feel at home because its a great country and the people are very friendly but I think that they are not truely African...To be Afican you need to be born here or have lived here for quite some time...It is something only those of us who have, will understand.
I am proudly African!

I love this question because I often wish to say that I am African - I believe that all mankind came from there so I keep thinking perhaps that makes me African although I have no modern day ancestry from there.
I have meet so many terrific and beautiful people from the various countries in Africa plus I love their diversity, music and culture. I love the sound of the english spoken specifically in South Africa!

I have never had the opportunity to visit but my heart and spirit is so drawn to this place when I see it in pictures, on TV, read the literature and meet the people from there. As Will Smith says it is his home, I shall proclaim it my home as well. So I too am African if only in my heart!

I hear you. The only place i want to be is in Cape Town watching the sun setting. I am truly an African. The only way to get me out of Africa is in a six foot box. I would love to see many "African Americans" try live in Africa. People living in North Africa are not black are they therefor not African? Africa is my place my land.God Bless You Africa!

If you are born and raised in Africa, you are an African irrespective of your skin colour.
I am the product of a second generation German-speaking Namibian and a third generation English-speaking South African - both my parents were white Africans and thus I am a white African. And I am very proud to be an African.

Dont worry...You are still african.. Nothing can change that fact..Your part of that wonderful land..... If someone tells you otherwise....dont be bothered...

I am a brown complexion african, i am proud to call myself african....and you should...never mind your skin color....that doesnt change anything or determine you being part of the colorful beautiful Africa.....

I think people would also do well to remember that there is really only one race - the HUMAN race. We are all part of the human race, born in different places to different parents, belonging to specific cultures and speaking our own languages. Always be proud of where you are from. That, unlike many things, is something no one can ever take from you.

Since apparently all humans evolved from knuckle dragging cavemen on the african continent, we are all african. Even tho i appear caucasian and my recent ancestry is from europe, i still check the 'african-american' box on job applications. I can;t wait to apply for a scholarship.

I think only people from Africa should be called African, regardless of their skin color. It's a geographic thing, not a racial thing, IMO.
