I'm a Nurse who works for a Registry. That is a company who sends me to different hospitals and/or nursing homes. I'm curious, what do you think of when you hear about nursing homes. I can tell you that 99.9% of the places I've worked are understaffed......yet it is the nurses who get the most "pooped on". The residents don't appreciate, poor things, most can't even remember who or where they are. The Family members who come in only once a week (if that) yell at the nurses for not doing something (cuz their busy doing something else), Doctors yell at the nurses for "calling them late" or "bothering" them.
THere are a few GREAT places like San Joaquin Gardens Care Center.......professional, awesome place to recover...then there are those that......oh my God Are a Joke ........Its' amazing they are even still open......give me your thoughts................and Yes, I love my job.....just amazed by how people act .......I know.....lots of emotions involved. No Profanity please.

I am a professional who has worked in SNF's. I understand that most are understaffed. I have only seen one facility that I would feel somewhat comfortable sending a loved one too. I see too that nurses are overworked, as well as the CNA's who unfortunately are left to tend to a lot of the patient's routine needs. When the CNA's are understaffed, they are stressed, and unable to give the individual care and attention that the patiens need. They are too worried about how many showers they have to get in that day, and how many people they can feed at one time. I'm sure it's hard for a resident to show appreciation when they can see the streess eminating from everyone's heads, and they've been left sitting in their own urine for a half hour while someone else finishers their shower. If SNF's have a good number of quality staff, they can be a wonderful supportive place, but unfortunatly, they are becoming harder and harder to find. As for the doctor's, well,....doctor's will be doctors. A lot act as if you are bothering them, but who cares. You are doing what needs to be done to care for a human being.

I've done this before and gotten out of the profession.
I was not happy with the way nurses are constantly understaffed whether in skilled care or in a hospital. There are shortages in hospitals as well, and nurses get crapped on pretty badly there too.

If you want to get out of skilled care, get into nurse consulting for an insurance company, school or physician office nursing, or whatever interests you.

You will certainly burn out by the time the demands by the residents or patients are met. And other areas of nursing pay as much or better than hospitals and LTC facilities.
