Both bowling alleys I bowl in have synthetic lanes.

I like the challenge of wood better... I think synthetic is too easy, and IDK, i just dont like the feel of it.... I have bowled synthetic occassionally open bowling, but every league I've ever bowled was wooden, so thats just what I'm used to and what I'm comfortable with... And like i said its more challenging... The "rival" bowling alley which has synthetic lanes, everyone I know who switched to there avg. about 10-15 pins higher... I feel if you can bowl wooden, you can bowl anywhere...

Unfortanetly, though my lanes are family owned, and I hear hes getting ready to retire and go down to florida... The town is looking to buy it out from them and turn it into a parking lot for the marina thats behind the bowling alley... So bottom line is its gonna be torn down in another few years, and I'll be forced to switch to synthetic or quit the sport...

Credecrew's response is excellent. Synthetic lanes generally act like heavily-conditioned wood. Slow your ball speed down a bit and let the ball roll. Averages on synthetic lanes tend to be lower than on wood - don't be discouraged. As more and more centers replace their wood lanes with synthetic, it's great experience to have. If you ever want to bowl in tournaments, you'll need to be comfortable with both situations.

I prefer real wood lanes, but most nowadays are synthetic.
