I will be using the machine to make my own clothes and make home repairs to soft furnishings. I am not the most light fingered individual so need something quite robust to cope with anything!

I would just look for something without a lot of accessories. You probably won't want to start off with something that does special embroidery, for example. But a lot of learning to sew has more to do with how complicated the patterns are than the machine itself, they are all pretty similar in the way they work, so do make certain that you get one that's sturdy enough for the fabrics you will be using (if you're using upholstery fabric or denim, you'll need a stronger machine).
