You should look through the peephole. See who it is. If you recognize the person and you want to let them in then let them in.
If you dont recognize the person then make them go away.
Be your own security.

This did happen to me. Somebody was ringing the bell and knocking on the door very hard and alot!! Scary at first, but after looking out of the "peep" hole, it turned out to be my next door neighbor's son. He wanted to use the phone to call the cops on his mom's boyfriend, because he was drunk and yelling and beating them up and he ripped their phone right out of the wall!! So I would say it depends on the nature of the ringing and knocking- pranksters or someone needing help. Pranksters beware!! This took place at about a few min's before 3:00a.m.

Unless the person at the door is a family member or a police officer, I'd ignore it instead and cover my ears with my pillow until the person stops knocking... if not and I get seriously annoyed, I'd throw a knife through the window then I'd go downstairs and pull a larger knife before I open the door. lol.

I'd let my German shepherd out of her crate and have her, the cordless phone, and my .45 with me when I opened the door. (With the safety chain still on, as a precaution.)
I'd first check to see if the person looked high or drunk. And even if they said there was an emergency, I'd offer to make a phone call for them. . .on MY side of the door. Nobody that I don't know gets into my house at any hour of the day if they have no business being there.
If they got nasty or abusive, I'd slam that door and call 911 as fast as I could dial it.

It really depends. If its an emergency I'd let them in and i mean a real emergency like life or death not Im feeling sad help me. If its a friend being retarded I would yell at them and warn them that if they ever did that again I would never speek to them again. Or If i could see they were drunk or something from a window I would sneek out the back door and come out to the front and scare the crap out of them and chase them away. Or more likely I wouldnt answer.

I would ask who it was but not open the door unless I was sure I knew the person really well.

If I were alone, I would look through my window to see who it was. If they weren't familiar to me, I would figure out what they wanted by yelling through the door with phone in hand, 911 on speed dial.
If my husband were home, I would send him to answer the door:)

I'd cautiously go and see who it might be, with phone in hand and my gun!
I am single, female, living alone! I've got to consider a safety factory here.
Fortunately, this has never happened to me!
