When Paramount ended a production deal with Cruise, because of falling profits, Sumner Redstone cited his personal behavior. Has Cruise shot himself in the foot or is it an overblown media reaction?

Saying Tom Cruise wasn't the top star isn't an answer. I don't care for him either. To the extent that such things can be ascertained, he had the largest box office draw in the world for many years, which is an effective determination of being "top." Don't be infantile.

His star has faded. I wouldn't put it past him to make some sort of comeback, though -- but it would have to be on the basis of him radically shaking up his acting abilities and reevaluating the rigid repressed anger he projects in the caricature of himself that he has become. He used to balance a kind of simmering aggression with a boyish charm -- like in 'Jerry Maguire' and 'A Few Good Men' -- very few young actors could have counter-balanced Jack Nicholson the way he did (maybe Sean Penn, but try thinking of anyone else). So he has some true talent. But he has to snap out of it and focus on acting again, and reach the apex of his talent, if he hasn't already done so. It's hard to say right now, because his creepy mid-life crisis is getting in the way of everything.

Most interestingly, if you want to pinpoint where it all started to unravel, I think it was with 'Eyes Wide Shut.' I think Kubrick was such a superb director that he drew out all kinds of stuff from Cruise and Kidman that they did not even know they were projecting -- his closetted weirdness (gay or not) and her teflon-coated flatness that exists under her rather better acting ability. But really 'Eyes Wide Shut' was about Cruise still living on the surface of the surface of the surface -- and he's been doing it long enough now that it really shows. That film is really a measure of how great Kubrick was as a director - over and above the talents of his actors, because he took a classic hollywood stage couple and somehow got to the heart of what they were, and broke them in half, just with the sheer force of his vision. Kidman survived, at least for awhile, but Cruise has been a marked man ever since. She got an Oscar sometime around that period, and as far as I recall, he did not.

I don't like Tom Cruise. Neither do a lot of other people. However, he is one of a very rare breed of actors that brings such intensity to the role, it doesn't matter. Anyone that is writing him off because of this little P.R. patch doesn't understand the industry.

I absolutely guarantee that he will bring such intensity and professionalism into his next role that he will regain prominence even if he grows an extra arm or leg and is outed as a secret alien. That's the biz. And truly talented actors are extremely rare.

Any time you are ready to assign the Cruise-meister to the trash heap, start remembering back on some of the scenes from Rain Man, Cocktail, Far & Away, Jerry Maguire.......he's not a lightweight and not subject to public whim.

(way to spar with the answer retards, nextexiter!)

In my opinion he never was the top star in the world. He definitely shot himself in the foot because of his behavior! Maybe he's going through a mid-life crisis?

He'll do well - but he's no longer the untouchable mega-star he was. He's shot himself in the foot for sure - but when you're that big - coming down will bring him to the level of regular movie stars.

Not anymore since he got booted from the Red Carpet, Hollywood, and the Emmys.

I hope not - he thinks he is better than everyone else and knows everything about everything because "he's done the research - have you?"... I don't wish him ill but if he isn't so popular anymore than I will see less of him and that is a good thing for me. :)

No - MI3 didn't even make enough money to pay for itself. Nobody cares anymore because he went all crazy too many times. He's lost his start power.

I think he just got old. Too many good actors nowadays. Christian Bale and Edward Norton are probably my favorites.
