Well, I have 2 femal swordtails that have swollen bellies and I have another black and white spotted fish that looks the same. I forget what kind of fish the black and white ones are, but they are just about the same size as the swordtails.

Be careful - your fish may not be pregnant, but they may have a parasite known as "Bloat".

Here are the ways to treat the Bloat parasite...

To treat Bloat, the plan of attack is:
Metronidazole and water changes, water changes, water changes!!

1. Remove carbon/resins from filter.
2. Perform a 30-50% water change (reduces free-floating bacteria population)
3. Add salt (teaspoon to a tablespoon per gallon) to aid the fish's osmotic regulation processes.
4. Treat with 250mg/20gallons of Metronidazole (Flagyl)
5. Leave for 3 days and do not feed.
6. After 3 days, perform another large water change.
7. Replace the salt.
8. Add full dosage of Metronidazole.
9. Wait another 3 days. During this phase, the bloat should be decreasing in appearance. In large fish, the water may take on an ammonia odor from the high volume of urea the fish should now be producing due to reducing the bloat and recovering renal activity.
10. 3rd day, another water change. Also, replace the salt and redose the metronidazole (full dose). If the fish looks to be well on the road to recovery you can offer a small feeding each day.
11. Another water change. No meds but, I'd recommend the salt. You should be clear now.

This is the treatment I use on my africans, puffers, and my lungfishes/polypteridae. Knock on wood that it's worked every single time

Hope this helps.

Most fish don't get pregnant, and instead lay eggs. Swordtails, platty, guppy, and molly do give birth to live young. (These fish are related and often called the livebearers.) Your other fish sound like Dalmatian molly. Gestation is generally a month, but can vary a bit. With livebearers you'll notice a swelled belly, and a black spot(s) on the belly of lighter color fish.

Generally the female will start hanging out in a corner, or near the bottom for a few days before she gives birth. If you are trying to keep the fry alive. This is the time to move her into a breeders net.
(Personally my tank is full so I just let the other fish eat them.) Unlike most fry these guys are "relatively big" and will eat crushed flakes, or brineshrimp. Note that live or frozen food can carry disease. Freeze dried is sterile, and easy to keep.

PS- A good food for expecting livebearers is freeze-dried brine shrimp. It's also good for the fry. Just remember live bearers are omnivores, and require a lot of vegs in their diet. An ideal mix would be an algae flake, and brine shrimp on aternating days.

PPS- All live bearer can take lerge amounts of salt. Molly in fact can live in salt water if the change is slow. If you just have molly, swords and plan on not have any other type of fish add 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon. Disolve in tank water 1st, and put no more that 1 per 5 gallons a day. If you have or will have other types of fish put it 1 teaspoon of salt per 5 gallons. Table salt is good as baby fish need their iodine, and table has only trace amount any way.

Well in livebearers: guppys, mollies, swordtails, and platys, they will be swollen and you can see some dark matter in the belly area if the fish is light colored. I remember mine having babies in about a month or less from the time I could tell they were pregnant. They usually start staying in the corner of the tank when they are ready to give birth. The livebearer fish (as their name indicates) dont lay eggs. Make sure they are separated from the other fish in the tank or they will get eaten

do you know the sex of the black and white one? Hint: the dorsal fin(on the belly) will be straight on a male and faned out on a girl. Their bellies will get larger if they are pregnant thats really the only way to tell. I'm not sure on the gestation period but it's around a month.

There's no solution to "prove" that all fish as soon as breathed water handiest, in no way walked on land and had been on no account pregnant, when you consider that that we nonetheless shouldn't have catalogued the whole animal/fish population of the earth as good as studied the historical past of each one. 3. This is a component of the problem, the best way we use our words ... Mutation isn't evolution.
