This little book of power suggests you should never outshine your master. What if your master is a leper? Surely being the opposite of your master gives you a combined strength greater than being an inferior clone of your master?

You must understand human nature for the answer to this question. It is very hard for any boss to accept an employee knows more than he does and let that employee take the lead. There are exceptions, but they are rare.

If you outshine your boss, you might find yourself without a job. You CAN avoid a real problem by carefully saying "We think" and "we've researched this" and even asking your boss's opinion in the meeting. Make it clear that you've worked together.

It's really a good idea to have a meeting with the boss before the meeting and go over what you're going to present so the boss doesn't look out of the loop.

What are the benefits of not outshining the boss? You stay employed. Your boss will give you glowing performance reviews. When you move on to your next job, you will probably get some help.

Learning how to exercise such tact will also affect your personal life. Sometimes the best way to succeed in the world is to show those around you that their opinion matters and you are willing to listen to it and consider it.

Any master worthy of the name would consider it an honour to have brought a pupil to the point where the pupil becomes the greater master. Otherwise what is the objective of their relationship.

You may not always succeed but you should always strive to outshine your master.

Perhaps the advice means never to seek to embarrass your master?

any true teacher should be pleased if a student progressed enough to be better. however, a true teacher will learn as much from the student as the student does from their master. even a master will never, ever know everything about anything so the master needs to continue the learning process as well as the student. the more one knows the more one realizes how little they actually know.

It never sugested you should clone your master, just to have the manners not to out shine him, you can do that in a slightly different field or when he is not looking or something.

If no-one ever out shone their master nothing would ever improve and standards would gradually but steadily decline... just like the standard of TV nowadays.

If you are doing it so people can see just how much you have come along, then,no. But if you shine naturally, your teacher will be glad to see you surpass him/her.
