A programmer is a person that writes the software code from a given specification and design.
Over time a programmer can move forward and become a developer, someone that has a hand in the design as well as the coding.
Then you move on to Analyst Developer, someone that is involved in the design, specification and coding.
Finally there's the Systems Analyst, this is where we end up and don't do a great deal of coding anymore but dearly miss it (Yes, I'm a Systems Analyst)!

You can read and study all you want, but experience programming and figuring out how to program a certain task is the way to become a great programmer.

the programmer writes the computer program in a given computer language. a great programmer has the ability to work with several languages, and is usually college, and business trained to work with the systems languages. becoming a great one takes time, ability, and willingness to explore new ideas.
