The general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon. But when you buy fish, don't forget that they are probably going to grow so I would go with 3 or 4 little tetras. If tetras don't appeal to you, you could try a beta with some african dwarf frogs or a snail or two. I would stay away from gold fish unless you intend on changing a portion of the water about every other day. Hope that helps. Also, don't forget that no matter what kind of fish you add, it's important to set your tank up at least 1 or 2 days before you add any fish and let the filter and heater (if you have one) run through. It is also important to maintain a normal maintainence schedule for your tank. Even though it's a small tank you need to change about 1/3 of the water every week. Hope that helps you and good luck!

You're pretty limited in a 5 gallon. If you get a small heater....25 watt should be suficient, you can maybe put 5 or 6 neon tetras and a couple of ghost or cherry shrimp. Or one Betta and a couple of bamboo shrimp. You don't have to have a heater for the betta though.
Another idea would be 3 - 4 male guppies. In any case, you don't have too many choices since the tank is so small. You have to stick to fish that don't grow more than an inch in size. Bettas get larger than that but you can only have one male betta in the tank anyway and can't keep a female in with him....so that limits you to one fish. You might get away with one male betta and a few neons but the betta may eat the neons since they are small enough to fit in his mouth. I have seen a betta with neons, but that was in a larger tank where they had much more room.
In any case, even though you are quite limited in what you can do with a 5 gallon, you can really make it look good with some live plants (providing you have lights). Something simple like Moneywort (taller background plant) and some cryptocerna (low foreground plant). Those plants can tolerate lower lighting level of a standard bulb. Some colorful gravel and a few of the small fish I mentioned.....that little tank could look pretty neat.

It relies upon in case you have a clear out interior the aquarium, in case you do no longer then betta fish is likely one in all the only freshwater aquarium fish that don't desire filters, they start up off @ $2-$3 USD @ petco or petsmart, they're the fishes at petco or petsmart interior the situations labled betta, (male or woman), you additionally can carry a single betta In a a million/4 gallon field with out clear out, warning: you could purely placed a million male betta in a million tank on my own, you have got the potential to hold a woman and male betta at the same time even nonetheless that's a sixty 5-35 risk that the mald betta won't like the female betta and kill her, or perhaps the male does like the female then you definitely gets a minimum of 20 eggs, and you will have problems looking places for the toddlers, even nonetheless you could placed multiple woman bettas at the same time, person betras even artwork in filtered tanks in basic terms regardless of you do dont purchase a sprint one betta, toddler bettas are so small that they die because of the fact of their length, And in case you placed a sprint one betta in a tank with a clear out, then $2+tax is long gone toddler bettas can cave in interior the clear out, get decrease by ability of the clear out blades, and die, then fall down I even have journey toddler bettas are between the only spicies of freshwater fish that would fall underwater, in case you have a clear out, Then guppies and those 20¢ goldfish at petco and petsmart and ghost shrimp will artwork

I do not recommend goldfish they are very messy and you have to change the water ALOT! My bf lost a lot of gold fish due to the water having to be changed so much and he has a 5 gallon tank.

A small school of 5-7 zebra danios or white cloud mountain minnows. They stay small and you will be able to enjoy schooling behavior. Both are easy care fish.

If you have a filter, you can get tropical fish. I have 3 platys and an algae sucker to keep the tank clean. I have had success with these fish and not with regular goldfish.

Guppies and Zebra Danios. Just not too many of them because the tank is small.
