It's currently 4.7%. The unemployment rate is lower than the average unemployment rate from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's. Wait, it's even lower than the average unemployment of the 90's? Yes!

If our economy is not "doing well", which country's economy is better? Our economy is still the envy of the world.

dstr you are the moron. Unemployment rates have always been established the same way. So, you can compare it with other countries or other time periods and see the significance of 4.7%.

The Federal Reserve chairman stated recently that the reason wages are not higher is due to an education deficit in this country. Better paying jobs are out there, particularly in science and health care. People who don't want to work at Walmart should think about getting a student loan and study to be a nurse, rad tech., or bio-tech. Among other needs that we have.

The unemployment numbers cited by the GOP are a red herring. It's widely known by both parties that part of the drop in number of unemployment claims are due to the huge numbers of people who have given up trying to find jobs and left the workforce entirely. People trying to get by doing odd jobs, working under the table, or trying to make a living selling on Ebay. Certainly some have been very successful. Many have not.
Of the job growth we do see, the vast majority of these jobs are very low paying service-sector such as fast-food restaurants & Wal-Mart greeters. Jobs that don't provide a sufficient wage to live on, and have no medical or dental benefits. That's one of the reasons our national debt has skyrocketed and bankruptcies remain at all-time highs despite the recent reforms in bakruptcy law- people are using credit cards to purchase basic necessities and pay bills, unlike in the past.
The good corporate jobs with which an indidivual can theoretically support themselves and possibly a family continue to vanish from the American Landscape. Manufacturing, auto industry, airlines, telecommunications - those industries are still dropping employees at a record pace. And the manufacturing jobs are gone for good- those jobs aren't coming back.
Customer service and support (call-center) have been outsourced to countries like India and the Phillipines- you almost never see opening for that kind of work anymore. It's just basic business sense- when a company can hire a competent programmer in India for $10K a year, they can't afford to hire Americans at 4x that amount and remain competitive.
Now Intel is expected to lay off another 10,000 employees shortly, adding to the misery.
Now at the high-end, things are actually much better. But most of the population in America doesn't fall into the $100k salary range of senior corporate management, where demand exceeds supply.

throughout the time of president Regan's first term, It grew to become into obvious to all and sundry. That we've been headed interior the suited direction. we can't say or see that at present. The assessment to Regan has come and long previous. It grew to become right into a distinctive time, distinctive financial equipment. It has already been shown which you won't be in a position to evaluate the two nor their administrations.

The economy is not doing that well generally though. People may be employed but they're making less in terms of real (inflation adjusted) wages and have fewer benefits. So it's a mixed picture.
"What seems clear from the recent data is that the United States has fallen into a new period of wage stagnation — a sequel to another such period lasting from the mid-1970’s until the mid-1990’s — that has begun to darken the public mood. In a New York Times/CBS News poll done last month, more than two-thirds of respondents said they thought that “things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track” in this country. People’s expectations for the economy over the coming year are as downbeat as they were in the pessimistic days of 1982 or 1992, according to the University of Michigan’s consumer surveys."

Yes it is amazing, thanks to a strong economy and the largest ever revenues from tax receipts. Isn't it odd, we are always told when you give a tax cut to the citizens that fed revenues will go down. Gee I guess those people are WRONG.
Thanks for pointing that out since you will never see or hear anything good about the economy in the news.
Have you ever wondered why the news will not report the good news on the economy?
Do you think they don't like the President?

The unemployment rate is an absolutely useless measure of societal health. Probably 65% of those working are on the government tit in one form or another, or will have to be eventually. If a job doesn't produce a financially self-sufficient American, then it is a job void of any social value.
There are ways to raise the living standard of Americans and the number of self-sufficient people, but that's for another time and another question.
