i believe its the Rutherford experiments. He shot beta particles at a thin film and detected the beta particles on the other side. Most of the beta particles went through however a very small fraction of it was scattered meaning that there was some thing dense in the middle of the atom. He calculated the atom to be mostly empty space with a dense center dense enough to deflect beta particles

Yes, Rutherford experimented with alpha particles from a radioactive sourtce and not beta particles which are electrons.
