My green plant keeps getting covered in a white pest, it looks like tiny bits of shaving foam, and when I wipe it it has a rusty colour on the kitchen paper. It keeps coming back, how can I get rid of it?

Identify first. Sounds like cottony scale to me if they are mostly on the stems. Whiteflies if they are on the leaves. An oil will usually take care of them but it has to be a "light" oil such as Neem oil or some other horticultural oil. If you use a heavy oil it can clog the pores that the plant breathes through.

Another alternative is insecticidal soap. It kills them in the same way as oil--by suffocation. Since ther is no poison in either you must make sure to "hit" all of them.

sounds like white fly. you have to cut off what is covered. it will eat your plant inside out if you don't treat it immediately. also go to your local gardening store and find something to kill white fly. best of luck - it's hard to get rid of.
