1- You need a LAN cable or two WIFI USB.
2- If you don't have hub, crossover the LAN cable (there's guide also).
3-Configure both its TCP/IP settings.

Here's some guide for you to follow!

You'd probably want to purchase a wireless router with a few ports on the back. I usually use Linksys routers personaly, but you can use pretty much any that you want.

In your desktop you'd want to have a LAN card, again any manufactuerer will work but you'll want to go with the same manufacturer as your router is most likely.

In your laptop you should either have built in wireless, if it's newer, or you can get a PCMCIA wireless card for it.

They'll all have instructions included on how to connect them all, and Windows XP makes it pretty easy to do as well.

See if you have network cards on both.
Then go and ask for a cross connection cable with RJ45 connectors, tell them that you need the cable to connect two computers directly. They will make one for you. Tell them the length of the cable you need.
