Occasionally it is overwhelmingly clear that I have not given the best answer and on these occasions I vote for someone else's answer. Otherwise I vote for my own. I am often pleasantly surprised, and sometimes a little embarrassed by the points I get. It seems that not that many people spend time on voting for questions they have answered or questions in general. Pity really.

Well if I voted for my own answer it would get me an extra point from the two anyway. Though most of the time, if there is a good answer there I would not put mine in, especially if it covers all the points that I would have made. Why repeat?
As for self-aggrandising... of course people will vote for themselves over another who has an equally good answer. In the situation that it's actually better, it will come down to the moral integrity and ego of the person.
For some people "points make prizes", sown by the larger proportion of lame answers to the thought out questions, but I like to think that they have been answered to help or give insight, not a point system.
Who am I kidding I got two points, ye-hee!

Unless you have two accounts which is not legal, you can't vote for yourself. I sometimes give the thumbs up to other answers when I see a really good, concise answer that would be similar or better to what I would write, and I move on to the next question.
I try pretty hard to give good answers, I think thats the whole purpose of this forum so if someone else has already given the asker a great answer, I don't see the need to be repetitive just to get two points.

I don't know it all, and therefore I do sometimes prefer other answers to my own and in that case I vote for the best answer even if it's not mine. Sometimes I have been voted Best Answer but maybe if just one more person had answered that question, I wouldn't have been.

Unless you're working a fiddle, I assume you're referring to those questions which the questioner has chosen to ignore and thus left open to a 'public vote'. Therefore, if people vote for their own answer, it's all a bit of a joke isn't it, and means nothing.

...I think about that all the time...and I'll be truthful with you...I don't vote on my own answers..if I see a good answer I'll vote, if I see a bad one I'll vote..just don't take advantage of the system..besides Yahoo knows when you're voting for yourself anyway..

When I put my mind to it, NEVER. But I have to be motivated by the question.
