Billie's father died September of 83.So if you figure he wrote that song in 2003 the song makes prefect sense.Like in the song when it go's "Like my fathers come to pass Seven years has gone so fast" Green Day was started 7 years after Billie's dad died.Or when the song go's "Like my father's come to pass Twenty years has gone so fast" in 2003 it was 20 years sense his dad died.Or the part of the song "Drenched in my pain again Becoming who we are"When his dad was sick Billie went room to room sing at the hospital. If he did not do that he probably would not be a professional singer.Listen to the lyrics and think about them.

Billie Joe has confirmed to the mass public that the song was written as a memorial anthem about his father, a jazz musician and minor league baseball catcher, who died of lung cancer when Billie Joe was only ten years old.
In this melancholy ballad, Billie Joe, backed by the support of the other members of Green Day, takes a trip back to his painful childhood and thinks about the day he lost his innocence when his father died. Like many faced with such a traumatic event, Billie Joe never truly recovered, and he can't believe that twenty years have passed since the day. As Armstrong associates pain with the month September, the death month of his father, he would rather not deal with anything related to the month prompting him to sing, "As my memory rests, but never forgets what I lost... Wake me up when September ends..."
Billie Joe has been known to cry during live performances of this song, and one such performance can be seen on their 2005 live DVD\album Bullet In A Bible.

September is the month in which the father of the lead singer of the band, Billie joe Armstrong, died. He wrote this song about his dad's death. I originally heard this from a DJ on a local radio station, but an article at Wikipedia seems to confirm it (the article is listed below so you can read it)

I know what you mean I was stumped by it at first. It's about these pair off lovers that love eachother-duh. Then the boy is sent off to war in Iraq and the girl is waiting for him to return in september but he's shot at and he dies. The girl is devastated and the song is just trying to show her and his emotions through the song by joy, hope, fear, sadness, mourning.

the song is about when billie joe's dad died in september when billie joe was only 10. It's quite an emotional song for billie joe and apparently in bullet in a bible you can see that he is crying a bit but it is a great song too.

Becuase Billie Joe's dad actually died it has a real emotion state in it. He is singing it with his heart where "holiday" doesnt have quite as much of a realisic story behind it. I love it too!

It's about when Billie Joe's dad died when Billie Joe was 10, I think. I don't remember exactly but I know it's about when Billie Joe's dad died.
