before they need replaced?

My wicks last for years but I also maintain them. Carbon deposits and tar build up on the wick as the units are used. One way to clean the tar is to let them burn dry. Do this outside, the tar will smoke and give an odor. I remove my wick two times a year once it is burned out and put it between paper then beat the carbon off with a hammer. put the wick back in and it will run like new. If not worth the trouble for you, burn dry about every 5 tanks and replace once every year or two. You will know if it needs replaced because the heater is hard to lite or takes a great deal of time to fire up to full burning.

Tupically they are fine as long as at least 1/2 an inch of the wick is still down in the oil. Just make sure there is new kerosene in it every winter, because kerosene does compromise with age and burn hotter, which may cause the glass to break.

Also, I saw somewhere that you can get scented kerosene for those romantic chilly nights.

Best of luck.

WE used Kerosend heaters for years and probably replaced the wicks twice, I use to take them out and brust the burned ends of the wick with a tooth brush to remove the crud that builds up on them ...

It would depend on how much you used the heater If you replaced it ever yr. you would not have to worry about the wick running low and not getting any heat
