I'd like to wait a month on this one. Ortiz looked to be the overwhelming favorite, until the Red Sox seeming collapse. Hafner is quietly having a great year, but I'd eliminate him as the Tribe have been a disappointment (not his fault, but...)
I don't belive Morneau is a big enough name yet, so I'd probably eliminate him.
Here's how I see it:
If the Red Sox miraculously get into the playoffs, Ortiz wins. For Ortiz to win otherwise, he'll have to fully recover and win the hr and rbi race.
Dye obviously needs to get the White Sox in the playoffs to have any chance. In fact, he probably needs to lead them to the division title to have any real hope.
Jeter is more of an intangible pick, and the favorite right now. The Yanks are all but assured of getting into the postseason, and I believe that his leaderhip --along w/ some pretty good stats - will earn him the nod this year.

Here are reasons not to pick these players:
1. Jermaine Dye - The ChiSox are the only team with 4 players with 80+ RBIs. That means that he isn't really carrying them on his back, and they might not even make the playoffs. They also have had pretty much no injuries to ANY of their players, except for no with Jim Thome, and the person carrying the team now is Joe Crede. He will definitely be a worthy candidate if they get into the playoffs however.
2. Derek Jeter - the only reason not to give it to this guy would be because he doesn't hit for power and because he has had Giambi and A-Rod with him the whole season. However, he has carried this team this entire season without Sheffield and Matsui, and now they have a 8 game lead on the Red Sox while missing two of their top players the entire season. All because of what he and Giambi have done. He gets the base hits that always help his tem, plus he has the stolen bases and the plays at SS every single game. He is the front-runner rght now.
3. David Ortiz - Has absolutely no chance right now. Only way he would win it would be if the Red Sox made the playoffs, but that won't happen. Yeah, he has like 46 homers or something near there, but they are 8 games back. And notice how he hit no homers when Manny was out with injuries. He really hasn't done anything for the team, so no way he is going to win. If he does, all of the voters should die because of how stupid they are.
4 Justin Morneau - Has to win the Wild Card. Joe Mauer is the catcher and all, but he has basically no homers, no RBIs, all he has is the AVG, but Morneau is hitting like .320. He will be automatically denied a MVP shot if they don't make the playoffs, just like Dye.
5 Travis Hafner - Plays on a team that absolutely sucks. That is the only reason he won't win, because the Indians are so bad.
So,
this is how it looks right now:
1. Derek Jeter
2., 3. Morneau / Dye - whoever wins Wild Card
4. David Ortiz
5. Travis Hafner
Jeter should and will win it.

As much as I would enjoy seeing big Papi take this title, I really think Derek Jeter is a more reasonable answer, especially now that Big Papi may not be able to play very much.

Derek Jeter, although I'd probably add Joe Mauer to the list.
