As I understood your BIOS are locked and you can't boot from CD. I wish I knew which OS you are going to install so I could give you more specific how-to instructions... Anyway, I'm sure you will find the appropriate Boot Diskette at the following web site: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm. All you need is to boot DOS with CD-ROM drivers and NTFS support. If your preinstalled OS is a winNT OS then there is a possibility of your HD to be NTFS formatted which means that you will be not able to access the HD if your DOS boot disk has no NTFS support. I hope I've helped you! Excuse my language I'm a foreigner. Good Luck!!!

BIOS chips are embedded on the motherboard. If you dont know the BIOS password, you can replace the BIOS chip for that specific board which is a major pain. It would be costly to replace the motherboars itself so you may want to try this...remove the motherboard battery located on the motherbord for about 10 minutes. This will reset the BIOS. You can sometimes change the jumper settings and it will erace the BIOS password but that only works with certain models. If removing the motherboard battery for approx. 10 minutes works, then you can proceed to re-installing the OS. If it wont install, it may be the disk or that drive that is bad.

It's very easy to reset a BIOS password. You just need to open up the computer case and look at the motherboard. There is a jumper call BIOS Password or password or pass or something like that. There are usually 3 pins. You need to switch the jumper from the two pins it's on to the next two pins, that will clear the password. For example

123 <---pins
xx . <----jumper if the pin is set like this... change it to:

123
. xx

then you can get into the BIOS and set the computer to boot from CD. Then you can reinstall your OS.

good luck

You can reset the bios password, there is a jumper on the mainboard to clear it.

You move the jumper to the reset position, turn on, turn off, move it back again. Then you'll be able to go into the bios and enable CD boot. Sorry I can't tell you where the jumper is but different boards have it in different places. It will be labelled though.

Some bios have a key to choose the boot device, it's F12 on a Dell but obviously that changes with manufacturer too.

I think you can use Fdisk to erase the hard drive. Then create partitions. Only thing that matters is that the first partition is fat16 [2gig or less] and is not formatted as fat32.
Boot with the '98 bootdisk; decline option to use large disk support, and partitions will be limited to 2Gig (and will format as fat16). If you use large disk support then partitions will be fat32 regardless.
