It looks like most of the other answers are fairly correct. You should have any exercise adapted to your body and fitness level. The one thing missed so far is that you have to tone the internal and external oblique abdominals as well. The best exercise for this is supine (on back) lower trunk rotation. I suggest placing a small foam ball between the knees while laying on back with knees bent, then turn knees and hips slowly to one side then another without dropping or squishing ball. Do not do any exercise if it increases low back pain or symptoms of pain/numbness in lower extremities. Also, slow steady movement is going to increase muscle faster and more safely that rapid uncontrolled movement. Best of luck!

Try the exercises that you know , look them up on the web or in the library .
I am sure few of them you will be more comfortable with and will work for you.
Every one is different so by trying, you will find out what is effective in your case, stick to them.

ab crunches are good, however, you can intensify by lifting legs off the floor while doing crunches (this isolates the ab muscles)
