Why do we have people in this country (USA) working on Labor Day?
Why are restaurants open on Thanksgiving...to feed people who can't make a turkey? Don't you think those employees would like to be home with their families?
Why do mom's work on Mother's Day, don't you think that they would like to be with their families?
Good ole USA, the country of familiy values, and business making money!

I meant nonessentils, like malls, restaurants etc.....those are places that can shut down fo a day, and truly reward their workers on Labor Day.

giraffedolly......I don't have to work this weekend, and I'm fortunate enough to work at a place that I can take time off as needed. I like to think I have a conscience when it comes to hard working people deserving days off.

Dr House....Move Out? Typical American redneck response. You see, I am originally from Europe and live in the US. Unlike you, I know what it means to live in this country I don't mean to generalize here, but I think only foreigners who have moved here can truly understand America.

I understand that the question was completely rhetorical, but in some settings, you can't avoid it. For example, hospitals, fire stations, police stations, etc., must remain open regardless of a holiday, and that means that people do have to work. As to the later trend of making stores and fast-food places open on holidays, well, yes, it did arise so that the stores could make more money, and, no, it did not take into account workers who would prefer to be home with their families. However, many places will give time-and-a-half for working on holidays, so sometimes, especially if you've no family living nearby or nothing interesting to do, it's not a terribly tradeoff. As to whether the stores really need to be open, no, of course they don't. But that's not my choice to make.

More of a rant than a question, but what do you do on a day off work. Most of us go shopping. And as for the restaurants, it's easier and faster than preparing it yourself (and nobody can make a turkey, they can only cook it). Oh, and mothers are the only profession that works 36/8 400 days a year and has to pay for the privilege.

We've become too spoiled and self-serving. We want what we want--and we want it now. If all non-essential businesses actually closed to celebrate holidays, we'd have to go outside ourselves a little an actually be responsible: plan ahead and get milk the night before; get gas the day before; cook your own meals (did she really say that??--YEP!), and so on. And, all those corporations would lose so much money from all those people who feel the need to shop that day or eat out. But, on the up side, it should be a great day for tips for the waitstaff who have to work :-)

These places are open because there is a demand. We used to have (some places still do) Blue Laws in this country. Stores, restaurants and other businesses are not open on any holiday or Sunday for that matter. Most places have done away with these laws.

I don't care what Hallmark holiday is coming up. Hubby will go to work, I will cook, clean, and do everything like normal. Nothing special, because the day is not special. And about the money thing, what is wrong with wanting to make money to support your family?

sometimes it's a choice you make - to work at the place you work at
i work in a hospital do you think we should shut down for the "holiday" and let the sick be unattended?
a few hours out of my day - will not ruin it - besides my family always waits for me to celebrate - and i enjoy giving my time to my patients.
