We live in Medicine Hat. It's a popular place for the British Army as we are close to BATUS. Any one who has been in the army can tell you what it's like here. As far as housing goes we are in a construction boom right now. New houses going up all over the Medicine Hat area. One site to check out for houses is www.homesacrosscanada.com If you are looking to buy in one particular area that site can narrow it down for you.

Lamont? It's not too far from Edmonton. I was there last weekend, for a few minutes, to use the washroom at the gas station. If you like really, really small town life, you might like Lamont. We couldn't find a restaurant that looked like it would serve a good dinner and ended up driving to Sherwood Park. Boring, but predictable. We've been looking for property in the country, so we are making the rural rounds.

When you come to Alberta - which city are you landing in, Calgary or Edmonton? - rent a car, get a map, borrow some camping gear and hit the road. If you camp, and it's a lot cheaper than hotels, remember that evenings can get quite cool. September sees overnight frosts.

All of Alberta is screaming for experienced tradesmen. If your husband is eligible for his journeyman papers, or even if he's not, he will have no problem finding work. Housing developments are being cancelled for the lack of trades to even start the job.

Good luck.

I live in Ontario but I understand Lamont is quite lovely (Canada is a very biiig country!). Alberta's booming because of its oil and everybody's happy there 'cause they know George W. wants it. Ha!

I can't give you any specifics but Alberta's a lovely province - quite spectacular if you like mountains and such. Funny thing about AB is that in winter, one day it'll be -15 Celsius and the next it can go up to +15. This, due to the Chinooks (winds) coming in from the Rockies. I don't know anyone who's been there - visited or moved - who hasn't loved it.

BTW, my dream is to live in England. . .

Edmonton is centralized to the rest of Alberta, and is booming. It is a real great city to live in, if you are looking for major city living...
In terms of Lamont, it is a real nice town... I have gone there numerous times. I don't know if it is a good choice for the profession of your husband's though.
If you are looking for something in between, there is Fort MacMurray, (I think I have that spelt right). I have a friend and his father whom both go up there for work, (finishing carpenters).
I hope this has helped you. :)
