hapsters dont' like cages, that's all there is to it. My advice is get some atachment pieces and maybe even attatch two cages together to give you hampster something to do. You can also keep extra pieces and change things every week or two to keep him on his toes. They like it when they feel like they can explore something new.

I would imagine they want to be free, and RUN! Of all the hamsters I have owned along with my kids hamsters, they all want to escape and run free. I have found the best (and easiest) way to catch them is to put their cage on the floor and make a little ramp (maybe cardboard) leading up to the entry of the cage. I add a little lettuce at the top of the ramp so they can smell it and entice them. When you wake up in the morning the little hamster is sleeping in his "bed". I have also put heavy books on top of the cage to prevent them from pushing it off in the first place. If you have ever tried to catch a hamster that has been free for a while, you'll agree.

no matter how big, now luxurious (from a human's point of view) the hamster's cage is, it'll always be like being locked into a flat, a luxurious villa, @ best;
for those of us who let their hamster run around some in a room or even a flat, it is like being allowed out in a shopping mall;

strangely enough, any hamster which is left roaming in a flat where s/he can't escape from will end up returning into his/her cage.

and those getting out of the flat / house? would they like to be able to come back in & return to their cage, soft, clean with food and water?

anyway, hamsters are extremely curious and quite smart and curiosity is probably what drives hammies to "break out"
for better or worse...

when hamsters or anything in a cage get out it means they want to see more in life or it means you take the time to play with it everyday like you should

The Freedom to Explore!

Hamsters love to explore and play with everything around them. If they do not have enough to do, I.E. you have not provided them with enough toys to play with then they will wander around until they are able to find something to play with.
