USPS, although an independent agency, still has yet to turn a profit. Although prohibited from taking allocations from the Government, it can, and does, borrow from the US treasury.
The USPS is in debt for well over 10 billion dollars. That would have to be paid off before it could be said to be profitable.

Because of the Private Express Statute and other laws, which don't apply to UPS and Fedex, the USPS can never really make a profit. The USPS was created with the thought in mind that universal delivery should be as available and cheap as possible. Since 1971 the USPS has been a quasi-independent organization, and so takes no money from the treasury, but it is still bound by the no profit laws.

By law, the USPS must break evern so any "profits" are plowed back into the company for buildings and all those grievances that need to get paid off, as well as the $3.1B escrow account the Fed said they had to fund

Sure they make a profit, but with the war on terror there is an increase in security at the post office. I'm glad they are making money. They have to make money, can you imagine the shape the postal sevice would be in if they didn't? take a month to get a letter if at all? They used to make a lot of money off of businesses when people had to send in a bill. Now you can pay them on line.

Last time I heard (a couple years ago) the USPS was slightly subsidized by the US coffers.
