As a first guess, I have to assume that the alien has a mind that functions just like mine because he/she asked a question just like I do when my mind is functioning. It seems that he/she also assumed that I have a mind.
So I would say " Perhaps having a mind means the same thing to me as it means to you - that is observing, experiencing, thinking , analysing, imagining, creating and so on. What does it mean to you to have your mind? What does 'having mind' means to you? How did you know I have a mind?" This kind of dialogue will open up ways to communicate so that I can understand how his/her mind works compared to mine and find out how it is similar and how it is different.

Our mind is like our body and soul part of our existence as a human being. I'll think the alien has a mind or performs his function for something else who has a mind. The universe is limitless im sure there are other life forms out there.

Whatever you do, don't let the alien see any newspapers or television--he will be sure human beings don't have minds. Then tell him that you are willing to take a trip with him to prove humans have minds.

I'd tell the little pasty faced, bugged eyed, mini mouthed, macro headed, interstellar interloper that it was none of it's business. And I'd tell the little crop circling, innocent citizen abducting, cow mutilating alien dwarf to get off my planet and not come back asking such questions!!!!

Damn, whatever you are taking, I sure would cut back on the dosage, and quit talking to aliens.
