Morning 'wood' is a normal part of male physiology. In fact, when doctors are trying to determine whether or not a man's erectile dysfunction is physiological or psychological, they will often apply a nocturnal tumescence monitor, which monitors the presence and duration of erections during the night. Several things can cause morning erections. One, as the bladder fills during the night, it tends to trigger a spinal reflex that can cause erection. Also, the congestion caused by the full bladder can decrease the outflow of blood from the penis. There are aspects of normal sleep cycling that tend to induce erection as well. Erections are experienced in REM (rapid eye movement ) phase of sleep. REM sleep is more frequent just before awakening than during the first part of the night.

Okay I will try and explain how erections happen but you will be most amazed by the fact that most of the time (at least in young men ) we don't do anything. Also, you will have to put up with a long explanation. In order to have sex a male penis must be erect. That erection is related to physical health, mental health, and emotional health (ego) If a male is threatened or scared or has anxiety about sex he may not be able to get erect. Erections occur when more blood is pumped into the special tissue in the penis than can leave. The arteries carry blood to the penis and the veins carry blood away from the penis. When the brain gives the command the arteries dilate (become very large) and more blood is pumped into the penis than can be carried away by the smaller veins. The result is the penis becomes engourged with blood and becomes erect. When erect it becomes more sensitive and sexual arousal is easier. The following things will trigger the command in the brain so that an erection occurs. Physical stimulation (the boy or other person touch and rubs the penis), visual stimulation (the boy sees a girl, a picture, or woman in a form of undress that triggers an erection) Males are genetically engineered to be set off by visual stimulations. This is one reason why most users of pornography are males. In childhood and early puberty (5 to 13) boys can get spontaneous erections. The brain just decides to trigger an erection. This is very embarrassing to boys because it happens at school, while at play, in front their girl friends, in the shower during PE. The boy does nothing to cause this it just happens really! Girls think boys are always horny and that is true for teen agers but boys don't do it the hormones do it to them. Mental stimulation, sometimes just thinking about a special girl or having masturbated last night etc. will stimulate an erection. Boys get no rest while they sleep either. While a boy sleeps at night he usually has up to 7 erections in his sleep. And if he has not masturbated for several days and is of the age to produce semen he may have an orgasm in his sleep ( a wet dream ) in which he shoots semen all over his PJ's or briefs and the bed sheets. It is usually a rather large amount. Then in the morning he wakes up with a very hard erection that is the result of pressure from a full urinary bladder on the veins in his penis. That has to be dealt with in some way so he can urinate. Erections are very much a part of a man's life. In our youth we do not do a lot to cause them they just happen. As we mature and enter puberty we learn to take charge of our sexuality and to control them to some degree but not totally. A man can cause an erection by physical stimulation, visual stimulation, sex play with a partner, or mental stimulation or fantasy. And most men use those things to get erections at private moments in order to masturbate in private and release all that sexual tension. When a man gets a partner then she helps release all the sexual tension and love making or having sex envolves physical, visual, and emotional stimulus.

during the night you don't go to the loo, so your bladder gets quite full - this puts pressure on the prostate gland, which prompts an erection - in the morning you go to the loo, the bladder empties, the pressure on the prostate goes and so does your morning wood!
most healthy men between 12 and 80 will get half a dozen or so full or partial erections during any given night that have nothing to do with sex - just your body pumping blood through your penis to keep it all clean as a whistle and working properly
