does anyone know any good websites for building detached garages with living space above them. I have been on coolhouseplans, and dreamhouseplans, and others but I still can not find the one I want to build. Also, does anyone know a good site with a checklist so I can be my own general contractor? thanks.

If you have the skill to act as your own General Contractor, I suggest you design your own project. Your local library will have all of the specifications you will need. It only took me a couple of years to design my shop in the back yard. I built it in a couple of weekends.
You are going to have to have a knowledge of: concrete, load bearing capabilities of dimensional lumber, plumping, eletcrical, exterior design, interior trim carpentry ( the stairs alone will drive you nuts), framing, roofing and flashing, siding, insulation, ect...
Perhaps you might want to reconsider hiring a General Contractor?

You can go to Home Depot or Menards and get the plans. People in our town have built their whole home from plans they got at Menards. Go online and look them up.
