Unused granular fertilizers will not loose its effectiveness over time. Just remember to keep it stored in a dry cool place on a shelf and off the floor. Keep opened bags tightly closed (it wouldn't hurt to place them in a plastic bag that's properly labeled). Exposure to moisture could cause some fertilizers to "clump-up" but it shouldn't alter its effectiveness.
