How can you be happy - even if life is going well for you - but at the same time the exact opposite pervades somewhere else...doesn't it make you sad & frustrated?

Happiness comes from within you. Even if ten people are unhappy but you made one person happy with your effort than the feeling which arise from within your heart, that is called happiness. Merely sitting aside and watch them suffer won't help anybody. It definitely is going to frustrate you.

Yes, there is such thing as happiness but often happiness is a by product of what is going on in your life at that moment. When you state (but at the same time the exact opposite pervades somewhere else). I think that perhaps you are confusing happiness with contentment and joy of heart.

I can and am usually content and have a joy of heart even in the storms of life. That does not mean that I am happy, it means that I know that, this to shall pass. I am content and have joy of heart because I know that through every storm in life, there is growth. If I am not growing, I might as well be dead and that would make me unhappy.

Good question but most difficult to answer....Liberty is defined as ": the quality or state of being free". We live in a state of liberty right? To some point it is true yet if we are completely free then we are able to do anything we want to do at all correct? And if we are completely free then we are going to be and will basically always be happy correct? Yes it is correct. Therefore we can do whatever we want, whenever we want, and that means we're free. In this country we cannot because there are guidances and restrictions. Sure these restrictions are meant to be for the common good and the happiness of the people yet all people cannot be truly happy in this sense.

Consider all those things and then you can gain the understanding that even thougha person is happy with the way things are going in this country and therefore happy in general, there are still some things within the country that one wishes that they could change. Therefore, I believe that since I have these feelings, other people have these feelings too. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is something all people should want in life yet is not always possible. Therefore I truly believe that true happiness is not possible since there will always be one person that is upset in the group. No matter what efforts are used and what measures are taken to try and ensure happiness throughout the general crowd, true and pure happiness, at least in our society, is not possible.

great question.. even if i am 100% happy and healthy and wealthy, knowing that some people suffer, is enough to make you unhappy. I think you would love the teachings of Buddha concerning happiness. he said that there is no happiness in life but only pain since even if you are very happy and do not care about others who suffer,y ou still know that there is the possibilty of losing this happiness in 1 second (earthquake, car accident etc etc) but happiness is not an illusion, i think that we can be happy in some sacred moments where God somehow makes us forget about others who suffer and for some time you can feel really really happy, however i think that constant happiness out of question in earth. either there is a heaven for that kind of real and infinte happiness or..i dont want to consider any other possibility.. --- however, i exactly feel the same way and knowing that a lot of ppl suffer, makes me seriously very very very very very very sad.

Happiness can last however long you make it to; you can find happiness wherever you look; you just need to look hard. Past the clouds of despair and the obscurity of death, there is happiness, but some have more trouble finding it than others; some merely accept the darkness and the only element of the world that exists. If we live accepting the darkness, then that is what our life is; that is what we made OUR OWN lives to be. But if we find happiness beyond the darkness and fight against it, then we can find happiness and have happiness in our lives; a man without happiness has no life, but a frail, empty shell of darkness that's slowly melting away...little by little...until death.

No, of course happiness isn't an illusion, because it is defined as an emotional state, not some physical object. As such, all that is necessary for it to exist is for us to feel it.

Anybody can be happy and sad. No person remains to be happy for the rest of his/her life.

We can be happy while part of us must feel sad because of a certain situation simply because no emotion is 100 percent exactly like it (sad, happy, etc.)

We are human beings not robots...

happiness is an illusion as much as any thing else. as we are and as we live in this world, among all illusions (or realities). These are the only things we know and experience, and happiness is one of the better illusions.

It is an illusion - a creation of our own mind. But it helps a lot in maintaining health and rest of our life.
