First Q: What the hell does anyone expect to "win" in any of those places? The goals of the administration have been re-defined every 6 months; and only one of them: removal of the Saddam Regime has been achieved.

People forget that the Romans, The Muslim Caliphates, The Spanish, The Soviets ,Nazi Germany, Japan, Communist China, and Saddam Hussain had great success in suppressing the irregular combatants of the populations of occupied territories. They did so by the use of massive force; killing (not imprisoning) enemy combatants; and especially the use of force and terror against the indigenous civil population to make them more afraid of the occupier than the guerillas. Unless we are willing to do the same, we cannot "win" anything -- not even the defined down goals of the Bush/Blair administrations.

Victory is defined as when you have destroyed the enemies WILL or ABILITY to continue fighting .
In this case we are fighting GANGSTERS , not a conventional military and it's going to take time .
In WW2 , we invested huge forces against the Japanese , a rather small country ,land and population wise . Forces at least 6X what we have in the middle east and it took nearly 4 yrs .
Heads up , eye ball to eye ball combat not the low intensity warfare we're seeing today . On Iwo Jima , the Marines lost 7000 K.I.A. in 1 day .
In the Middle East , we have the complication of terrorists from all over the world coming to fight . Nations like Syria and Iran sending weapons and money to keep the fight going . Then you have the fighting between Shia and Sunni over political power.
Yes, we could cut and run at anytime and leave the terrorists a power base , where the killing will go on as factions battle for power .
But, we'd gain nothing by doing so , we'd be setting ourselves up for worse in a few years .
We win when the Iraqi government and military are strong enough to take control of their own destiny as a nation .
All the armchair Generals in the world can not change the facts nor can Diplomates ( who do they talk to ) or the U.N. ( who would just surrender ) .

It started out right by blowing up and gunning down the main army of the country just like we did. Then the man hunt for the ruling party / leaders of the country which should have been shot on site and did not happen. But GWB stopped there and who knows why? It should have went on door to door till all wepons was removed from the country. Block the borders and everyone is smart enough to block the Iran border but GWB that is. After that it is up to the police to find the poeple who do not blong in the country.

Sadam was running his country just the way he had to run it to keep peace and the mass under control and never should have been taken down. People in that part of the world are not like the people in the USA or in GB or any other 1st world country. They are still living in the past and still believe in myth. They know no better than to believe in their bible which tells them to kill everyone act the way that they do. Women with face covered and that they should kill each other if they don't believe in the same god.

It is a shame and Sadam should not have been taken out of power. You get the kind of ruler that it takes to rule the kind of people you have to rule over.

Bush is not a ruler. More like a big kid with a lot of toys.

whoops I got off topic..

you can help stregthen the relevant governments. I am a Lebanese Christian and i know for sure if our government has all the help it can get, it will be able make Hizbullah weak. So the Lebanese Army in this case should be suppied with more weapons in order to have its stand.

You have to win the support of the vast majority of the population. It's been said many times that this can't be won militarily - it has to be won politically.
