Make a copy and send it to yourself registered post. That way you have proof that it's made before the date stamped on the package.

You made it, so screen it... Usually it's the script that you should register, but if you've made the film... then that's fine. The envelope thing would never hold up in any court, so it's just a waste of an envelope. But registering the script with the screenwriters guild of America or likewise is what u could have done, but you're fine if the film has been made and you're not breaking anybody's else's copyright.

Publish it (show it to someone, that's technically publishing), to show you have something to copyright. The proof inside an unopened envelope or package addressed to yourself is OK if you have it opened in the presence of a solicitor. Most composers, songwriters etc. do this if they're wise. Copyright ownership details can go on a frame or two of your film too, so to warn people off. The Performing Rights Society are your best friends.

You don't apply anywhere for copyright - you made it - and assuming you haven't used any copyrighted material in it - you already own the copyright. The posting to yourself thing is an apocryphal tale, it's been shot down in court many a time.
