For me it's the fear of the unknown, even if I know over half the folks in that room. Yes it's left over from our ancient lives. How much do you know about adrenalin and the reflex for fight or flight? We have adrenalin in our systems to give us this sudden burst of energy when we need to run away or fight something. It's all very primal. When we walk into a strange situation where we're not sure of ourselves our body is on guard and is gearing itself for a reaction. If anything this is a carry over from a time when we had to worry more about life and limb.

I think that humans have great instincts but we have forgotten how to use them. Sometimes we get a glimpse of them and that "sinking feeling" is one of them. Same as the hairs standing up on the back of your neck or instantly mistrusting someone. We tend to ignore our instincts because we are taught to be polite, show courtesy, etc. Normally, yes. But if you body is giving you signals you should listen.

I call it intuition. It's even worse when the hair on the back of your neck stands up. Then you know it's time to leave.

It's called intuition, and often women's intuition isn't wrong. Men have it too, but they're not as inclined to listen to themselves as women are. It sounds like you may be one of the few.
