Dimensional analysis allows you to convert from one unit of measure to another, among other things.

Let's say we are given a dimension in centimeters, and want to convert to inches. We are told there are 2.54 centimeters in an inch. 2.54 is the conversion factor in this case.

Now let's say a penis is 50.8 centimeters long. How shall we convert that to inches? Should we divide by 2.54, or multiply by 2.54? Dimensional analysis tells us.

Since

1 inch = 2.54 centimeters

the conversion factor can be written as

1 = 2.54 centimeters / 1 inch

or

1 = 1 inch / 2.54 centimeters

Now, we want to convert 50.8 centimeters to inches. We write the conversion using whichever form of the conversion factor gives us the dimension we need:

x inches = 50.8 centimeters * 1 inch / 2.54 centimeters

The word "centimeters" cancels, and we get

x inches = (50.8 / 2.54) inches
x = 20 inches

It's an elephant's penis.

Dimensional anlaysis can also be used where no conversion is involved. What are the units of impulse? What is an impulse? It is a force exerted for a certain amount of time. If the force is given in Newtons and the time in seconds,

impulse = force * time
impulse = Newtons * seconds

The units of impulse are called Newton-seconds.
